Who doesn’t love a rebate, especially when it comes to home renovations?
Much to the chagrin of Ontarians, the popular Green Ontario Fund, which provided reimbursements for new window installations, was cancelled in mid-2018.
But good news! On May 1, 2019, Enbridge launched its Home Efficiency Rebate program, which refunds homeowners with up to $5,000 for renovation/upgrade projects.
Are you eligible? And if so, what can you do to take advantage of this program?
About the Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate Program
Earlier this year, Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. amalgamated with Union Gas, forming Enbridge Gas Inc. Both companies previously had their own rebate programs but last May, they merged to become the Home Efficiency Rebate.
The Enbridge program provides a $5,000 incentive for completing at least two upgrade projects in your home. Even better: if you complete more than two upgrades, you may also qualify for a $250 bonus for each additional upgrade installed.
Window installations can qualify for a rebate!
Thinking of replacing your windows? Under the Enbridge program, you can receive $40 off each window, door or skylight replaced with an ENERGY STAR® climate Zone 2 or 3 qualified model.
So who qualifies?
There are a few stipulations to be eligible for the rebate, which we have outlined below:
- First, you need to own a detached home, semi-detached home or row townhouse.
- That residence must be heated by natural gas (whether a furnace or a boiler).
- You must also complete at least two renovations or upgrades listed here.
Before you start…
To participate in the program and qualify for reimbursement, you need to complete an energy assessment before as well as after your home renovations take place.
You will need to hire a Registered Energy Advisor to complete these assessments.
Keep in mind: each assessment costs approximately $500 upfront, which you will need to pay out of pocket. However, if you qualify for the program and fulfill its criteria, you will be reimbursed for this expense.
Book a Pre-Energy Assessment
You have two choices for getting started:
- Fill in your postal code here and complete the Enbridge questionnaire to see if you pre-qualify for the program, and they will have a Registered Energy Advisor contact you directly; or
- Directly contact an advisor approved by Enbridge. There are many advisors across Ontario, including in Simcoe/Barrie.
A Registered Energy Advisor will come to your home to do a basement-to-attic review of your home’s insulation, heating and cooling systems, and other energy use. They will do a blower door test to check for air leakage, which can lead to wasted energy, cold drafts, and poor air quality. The advisor will give your home an energy rating using the Natural Resources Canada home evaluation. You will also receive a report with recommendations for improvements (also called “retrofits”) to help lower your energy bills.
To learn more about what is involved in a pre-energy assessment, watch this Enbridge video.
The same Registered Energy Advisor can validate the work you have done on your home once it’s completed. This is known as the post-energy assessment. If you have fulfilled all the criteria of the Home Efficiency Rebate, you will receive a reimbursement within eight to 10 months.
