In 1925, contracts were signed for the drainage and irrigation of the Holland Marsh. The area has since been an important producer of market garden crops. Bradford West Gwillimbury is located approximately 70 kilometres north of downtown Toronto. Bradford is an attractive and charming community that offers more affordable housing than what’s available to those living in closer proximity to the GTA. The location is ideal for both residents and the farming industry, as it combines open rural spaces, urban amenities, and easy access to the 400 series highway.

The population of Bradford West Gwillimbury is approximately 32,000 residents. Statistics Canada has revealed that Bradford West Gwillimbury experienced a 25% percent growth over five years, marking it as the second-fastest growing municipality in Ontario. Bradford’s growth is predicted to continue at a strong rate, as the town works toward servicing the industrial area near Highway 400, which is expected to bring more jobs to the community.
History
The village of Bradford was established to supply the agricultural interests of its surrounding area. For a brief period in the mid-19th century, lumbering was a major industry in the area, as trees had to be removed in order to commence farming. Throughout the 19th and into the 20th century, growth was slow and steady. Grain was the main crop, and hay cut from the Holland Marsh area was used to stuff mattresses.
Economy
The Holland Marsh grows a multitude of produce types that range from traditional crops such as carrots, onions, and celery, to more diverse options like Chinese broccoli, Asian radish, and water spinach. The ability to grow and harvest these crops amounts to over $50 million worth of produce per year, and over 90% of this produce is processed and packaged in Bradford.
